National Native American Heritage Month
Every year, November is dedicated to Native American Heritage Month. Native American Heritage Month is a celebration of the diverse cultures, communities, traditions, experiences and contributions of Indigenous peoples historically and in American life today.
In recognition of National Native American Heritage Month and in honor of Veterans Day, it is an opportunity to also commemorate the Native American Code Talkers. In World War I and World War II, the United States military relied on a unique series of codes to keep its messages safe from the German and Japanese militaries. Approximately 400 to 500 U.S. soldiers of Native American descent, whose primary job was Code Talkers, transmitted secret, tactical messages over military telephone or radio communications nets using developed codes built upon their native languages.
Their code was never broken. The Code Talkers are credited with a number of decisive victories. They are commended for their skill and accuracy while improving the speed of encryption and decryption of communications in front line operations.
The Code Talkers Recognition Act of 2008 (Public Law 110–420) was signed into law by President George W. Bush on Nov. 15, 2008. The act recognized every Native American Code Talker who served in the U.S. military during WWI and WWII with a Congressional Gold Medal.
