Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

“Everybody can be great…because anybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.”

– Martin Luther King Jr.

Martin Luther King Jr. believed in a nation of freedom and justice for all. His policy of nonviolent protest was the central energy in the civil-rights movement from 1957-1968. We celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day, through MLK Day of Service, honoring King’s life, legacy of hope and inspirational mission and teachings.

MLK Day of Service is observed on the third Monday in January, as “a day on, not a day off.” This federal holiday is designated as a national day of service to encourage all Americans to volunteer to improve their communities.

Community service brings together people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities. MLK Day of Service empowers individuals, strengthens communities, bridges barriers, creates solutions and moves us closer to King’s vision of a beloved community.
