The history of the energy industry is filled with Black pioneers who made groundbreaking discoveries, changed paradigms and introduced innovations that forever changed our energy landscape. Energy innovations many take for granted would not exist without these great minds, some of whom faced the extra burden of oppression as they produced their achievements. Black History Month is a time to shine the spotlight on these inspiring individuals.
Black history is American history – something to remember all year, not only during Black History Month. An inclusive and diverse energy workforce is essential to tackling today’s energy challenges. Let’s embrace a commitment to improving equity and acceptance, while eliminating intolerance, prejudice and racism.
The 2023 Chesapeake Utilities Corporation Black History Month Competition has concluded. Congratulations to all who participated in this year’s contest. Scholarship winners will be announced on March 31, 2023, and recipients will be notified directly.

We’re giving away three $3,000 scholarships in honor of Black History Month. The innovation and accomplishments of Black Americans are immeasurable and the contributions have spanned across many fields including science, energy, technology, medicine, engineering, education, aviation and more. Enter our contest by submitting a short video highlighting a leader and sharing why they inspire you. Entries must be received by Feb. 28, 2023.
